On January 25, Martin Gurvich, the Director of Museo Gurvich in Montevideo and the son of the prominent painter and sculptor, José Gurvich, visited the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum. For M. Gurvich, this was his first visit to Lithuania, the homeland of his father.
José (Zusmanas) Gurvich was born in Jieznas in 1927 and as a child immigrated to Uruguay with his parents. Here J. Gurvich studied in the National School of Fine Arts and joined the studio of the famous painter Joaquín Torres García. J. Gurvich was soon acknowledged as a talented constructivist artist. The creative path of J. Gurvich, which started in Uruguay, later continued in Europe, Israel and the United States of America. The artist died unexpectedly at the age of 47.
M. Gurvich, the son of the late painter and sculptor, was welcomed by the Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum, Markas Zingeris. During the friendly meeting, possibilities for future cooperation in order to promote the heritage of José Gurvich and present his works of art to the Lithuanian audience were discussed. M.
