On the 27th of January, 2015, Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Vilnius organized the commemorational event, dedicated for the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp and the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The documentary „The Liberation of Auschwitz“ (2005, Chronos-Media GmbH in Berlin and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum), showing the original footage from 1945 concentration camp, was screened during the event.

Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Markas Zingeris spoke about the importance of this event and the authenticity of the documentary “The Liberation of Auschwitz”. M. Zingeris remembered the story of his mother, the prisoner of Shutoff concentration camp, and the Russian soldier, who saved her life: “It’s not the holocaust histories, but the real scenes of the holocaust”, said the Director.

The exhibition “They risked Their Lives – Poles, who saved the Jews during Holocaust” was opened this evening. Exhibition is based on the memorabilia of the Righteous and the testimony of the witnesses. Poles, which were saving the Jews under the Nazi occupation, faced the death sentence what wasn’t the case in the Western Europe. Thousands of hundreds of Poles were not afraid to countervail against the evil. They risked their own and their families’ lives saving thousands of Polish Jews. Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies in Jerusalem awarded 6454 citizens of Poland with the title of Righteous Among the Nations. Exhibition “They Risked Their Lives – Poles, who saved the Jews during Holocaust” shows Polish faces, people, who were saving Jews. Presents their histories, disclosing their motives in the historical Nazi occupied Poland’s context.
