The Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum together with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania is implementing the project of complex rearrangement of Paneriai memorial – the biggest Nazi crime place in Lithuania and the symbol of Holocaust in Lithuania. According to the project, a new visitor center will be built in the Memorial and a new exhibition will be established.
In order not to disturb the remains of those who perished here during the Second World War, there was a need to investigate archeologically potential places in which the new visitor center could be built. In 2015-2016 several places were surveyed using a georadar. After these non-invasional surveys a need of archeological excavations arose. The results of these excavations should confirm the data of preceding surveys.
Such excavations must be performed taking into consideration the rules of Jewish cemetery law, in which the most important point is – not to violate the remains of the dead. For this ascpect the Museum consulted the representatives of the Committee for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe – executive director of the Committee Rabbi Abraham Ginsberg. Samson Daniel Izakson, who is the Rabbi of Vilnius Jewish religious community, also participated.
After visiting the Memorial, the guests were invited to the Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon Jewish State museum, where they met with the director of the Jewish museum Mark Zingeris. During the meeting several questions concerning intended archaeological excavations were discussed.
A week ago the Museum got a positive answer from the Committee concerning the excavations in the potential place of future visitor center. The excavations will be performed by the archaeologists from Lithuanian Institute of History. The beginning of the excavations is May, 2016.
