“The past is a Foreign country”
L. P. Hartley
Elián Stolarsky is an artist, poet, and academic. Born in Montevideo in 1990, she has a degree in Fine Arts from UDELAR Montevideo and a Master’s with Great Distinction from the KASK School of Arts in Gent. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Complutense university of Madrid.
“Strange Country (Vilnius)” is the latest chapter in the artistic narrative she has been crafting. It resolves around the past as a domain – a peculiar country one revisits it ever – changed.
The origin of this work is rooted in a profound need to reconstruct – and heal – the fragmented, muted, and traumatic history of her family, forced into migration by war and religious persecution.
Elián Stolarsky’s artwork addresses the silent repercussions of violence on future generations and the healing role art plays in making sense of and coping with inherited trauma. In this exhibition, etchings (painter’s technique) and the digital image pieces from the series are featured, offering a selective glimpse into the broader collection: www.elianstolarsky.com
