From the history of Vilnius streets (continuation)
Mėsinių Street (current M. Antokolskio St.), black and white photograph, 8.4 x 13.4 cm, Acc. No. VŽM 9191/7
WWI-era photography. Photographer Rubinstein, one of the German wartime photo correspondents who worked in Vilnius.
Mėsinių Street was a busy shopping street and a symbol of the Jewish Quarter of Vilnius. The photograph was taken from the side of Stiklių Street.
In the foreground there is the wide arch that was located at Mėsinių Street 10 (the houses have not survived). The arch was approximately at the spot where the current house at M. Antokolskio Street 13 is located. The narrow arch is in the foreground. The street is lined with small shops and street vendors.
On the right side there is a sign of M. Ganss' shop: „Manufaktu[...] / Handlung / M. Ganss“ (Manufactory shop / M. Ganss).
Handwritten text in German (in pencil) on the reverse says: “Judengasse (Jewish Street). Vilnius, around 1916”. Neither the house nor the arches have survived.
The photo belonged to Field Marshal General Hermann von Eichhorn (1848–1918).
It was donated to the Museum in 2023 by Rolf Dyckerhoff, great-grandson of von Eichhorn.
