ANTANINA ŽEMECKIENĖ
1900–1967

During the Nazi occupation period Antanina Žemeckienė lived in Ukmergė and worked as a nurse in a hospital. Although Antanina herself was very poor and had two children of her own, during the war she sheltered and rescued a small girl Rozeta (Rashe Eta) Šolomovičiūtė (Sholomovich). In 1949, Rozeta’s uncle Mordechai Rabinovich found the girl in Ukmergė and took her to Vilnius, where her aunts and her grandmother Lifshe Rabinovich (Ganelina) were waiting for her and where Rozeta started a new life. Rozeta’s parents Sore and Girsh Sholomovich perished during the war. Rozeta kept in touch with Antanina Žemeckienė until her death in 1967.
