Quite a crowd formed, eighteen mouths deeded to be fed. My sister baked bread and it fell to me to carry milk and cook food in the bushes.
Jonas Markevičius

Juozapas Markevičius, his wife Elena and their seven children lived on the Trinapolis farmstead near Subačius. During the war the Markevičius family rescued nine people: the shopkeeper Wolf Kushnir from Subačius with his 13- and 18-year-old daughters Sonia and Asia and 7-year-old son Josef, Sima Shevel, Shalom Shorenzon, Szpinadel and two Polish refugees. Juozapas Markevičius’ older children Jonas, Romualdas, Vladas, Marijona and Valerija were his dedicated helpers. At least seven members of this family have been recognised as Righteous Among the Nations.
