HELP US TO ESTABLISH A NEW DEPARTMENT

In the photo you see a scene from play „The Two Kuni-Lemls“, performed by the Kaunas Jewish Theatre Studio. The play „The Two Kuni-Lemls“ was written by Abraham Goldfaden (1840-1908), who is considered to be the pioneer of the secular Yiddish theatre. This play was written in the second part of 19 c., and it is a timely and relevant story about conflict of unshakable religiosity and secular modernity: parents’ generation is keen to keep religious traditions whereas generation of their children are becoming more and more interested in the surrounding world and are keen to live without religious restrictions. The author of the play, Abraham Goldfaden was himself a maskil – supporter of the Haskala - Jewish Enlightenment movement, so it is no wonder that these ideas were also reflected in his plays.

You will learn more about Jewish theatre, changes and modernization of Jewish community in the end of 19 c., and ideas of Enlightenment in our upcoming Museum of Jewish Culture and Identity. We invite you to contribute to development of an interactive and modern exhibition by supporting our project.
