Underlining the historical and moral importance of the day, Markas Zingeris, the director of the Vilnius Gaon State Jewish Museum, welcomed the present guests, among them many foreign diplomats. Steinar Gil, the ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Lithuania, introduced the famous Jewish performing artist from Norway, Bente Kahan, born in Oslo in 1958. She studied the art of acting in Tel-Aviv and New York, and gives concerts in national theatres in Norway and Israel. On 24 September, “Songs from the Ghetto” were performed in English, German and Yiddish. The emotional and profound songs transferred the listeners to the years of the Second World War. The poetry recited and the songs conveyed the feeling of the ghetto inhabitants of the last century, who lived not knowing what the future held for them; although they entertained hopes, they had premonition. |
