On the 20th of December, the international medal exhibition to commemorate Boris Schatz was opened at the Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum.
B. Schatz (1866-1932) was born in Lithuania and attended the Vilnius School of Drawing. Later on, he spent a decade in Bulgaria, where he created and taught art in the Royal Academy of Arts. At the age of 40, B. Schatz moved to Jerusalem. In 1906 he established the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, which is still active today under the name of Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.

In 2015, CAN, Israel’s New Artists Collegium, together with Israel’s Artistic Medal Association, initiated the International Artistic Medal Project. Thirty-eight artists from Lithuania, Bulgaria, Israel, Poland and Ukraine participated in the art camps held in Lithuania, Bulgaria and Israel and created medals in order to commemorate B. Schatz.
The authors of the best works were congratulated and awarded in the opening of the medal exhibition, held in the museum‘s Tolerance Center. Romualdas Inčirauskas (Lithuania), professor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Telšiai faculty, was awarded the selection board’s prize for the bronze medal “Baruch Zalman Schatz”, while the innovative medal composition “Schatz”, made from bronze by David Zundelovitch (Israel) was voted as best by the participants of the International Artistic Medal Project.

In the opening event in Vilnius, greeting speeches were made by Markas Zingeris, the Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museu, H.E. Amir Maimon, the Ambassador of the State of Israel, Petras Gintalas, professor at the Vilnius Art Academy’s Telšiai Faculty, participant of the project and organizer of the art camp in Telšiai. and Lina Kalinauskaitė, medalist and member of the selection board. Two identical exhibitions were simultaneously presented in Sofia and Jerusalem. The participants of the openings were connected via a telebridge.
