On the 12th of February, 2016, Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum was honored by the visit of Nobuki Sugihara, the son of the Japanese Consul Chiune Sugihara, who was residing in Lithuania, Kaunas, in 1940.  Chiune Sugihara was awarded the title of the Righteous Among the Nation for issuing 2139 visas to save thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Sugihara was issuing visas together with Dutch consul Jan Zwartendjik in order to give Jews the possibility to flee via the Transsiberian Railway to Japan and Curaçao.

Son of Chiune Sugihara visited theTolerance Center (Naugarduko Str.10) and the Holocaust Exhibition (Pamėnkalnio Str.12). Nobuki Sugihara, who‘s currently residing in Belgium, together with his wife came to participated at the conclusive event of the project „Who was Chiune Sugihara?“, taking place at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. Nobuki Sugihara met with the Deputy Head of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Kamilė Rupeikaitė. They‘ve discussed the perspectives of the future cooperation.
